I lived in Harwell Village in the 60s and 70s in School Lane. Children Lynne, Cathy and John went to the local school. We had to move with our job but miss the friendly village. We have been back on nostalgic visits. Lynne used to bell ring in the church.
Miss East was teaching and Mr Smith was headmaster. Later it was Mr Davies who turned the school around.
The name Di Baker sounds familiar
Doubtless we will be back on more nostalgic visits. Our trip to the churchyard was sad as we saw many references to people we knew..
I worked at Rutherford Lab.
Good luck to Happy Harwell and all its residents.

There’s a bit more about schools in the “Village for a thousand years” book.

Miss Miles and Miss East are now commemorated with a road in the new houses of Great Western Park called Miles East.

I remember my brother Chris Cairns was a good friend of Johnny Tutton and he was very sad when you moved away. Chris lived in Harwell until 3 years ago when he moved. My tow brothers and sister all went to the old school in School lane. The toilets out the back were revolting! I can still ‘smell’ the canteen dinners that were served in the old canteen there! Mr Davies was before Mr Harold who was the main headmaster whilst I was there. My mum Brenda Cairns was also a part time teacher at the new school. Happy days!

Hi Annie
Just found your post. We were all very sad to leave lovely Harwell and remember the village fondly. Johnny Tutton remembers Chris. Johnny became a teacher and is married to Sue with a daughter (currently at Nottingham Uni) and twin boys.
We remember your Mum, Brenda, and her sense of humour. We lived in School Lane. We have been back on nostsalgic visits.
All the Tutton family live in Kent.
Best wishes to you and all your family
Audrey Tuton (Mum to Lynne, Cathy and Johnny).

Di Baker here and yes Audrey Tutton does ring a bell but I can’t think why.
My husband, Tony Baker, worked at The Rutherford Lab.

Oh my word! Jane Card was my history teacher at Didcot Girl’s many years ago. Undoubtedly one of the most influential teachers I came across – this is a total, and wonderful, blast from the past!!
